"Last week, President Borut Pahor made an inappropriate, unreasonable, xenophobic and objectively politically and diplomatically harmful statement to Slovenia that Turkey and Ukraine cannot count on full EU membership," the letter said.
Representatives of the Slovenian intelligentsia believe that Pahor, in his remarks, violated the declaration and strategy of Slovenian foreign policy. In their opinion, such statements may affect international confidence in Slovenia, as well as the deterioration of economic relations with Ukraine and Turkey.

The Slovenian Presidential Administration replied that Pahor’s opinion about the special status of Turkey and Ukraine in the European Union “has been known to the domestic and international public for many years.”
