The benefits of fish in protecting against diabetes level the pollutants it contains.

Scientists at the Technical University of Chalmers in Sweden claim that fish consumption can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, but strictly provided that it does not contain environmental pollutants. But how realistic is it to purchase such fish in the nearest supermarket?

For 10 years, experts have investigated the problem of the effect of fish consumption on diabetes. Experts have identified 30 blood biomarkers, allowing to accurately determine the number of fish eaten by people whose data were analyzed by the authors of the project. They found that fish itself is in itself an excellent product for the prevention of type 2 diabetes – first of all, its fatty types. At the same time, specialists were convinced that the active consumption of fatty fish by people correlates with an increased concentration of environmental pollutants in their blood.

Among such pollutants, organochlorine pesticides (DDT) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were identified, which are associated with an increased risk of endocrine disorders, including type 2 diabetes. Their concentration was especially high in fatty fish like herring and salmon from polluted areas.
