In the course of their calculations, the researchers came to the conclusion that products that increase the risk of death more than others also differ in their ability to negatively affect the environment.
Scientists have introduced the AREI index – a reflector of the average environmental impact of one serving of the product. It shows how the production of such a portion is related to the release of greenhouse gases, occupied land, environmental pollution, water demand and other environmental factors. They determined that meat is the highest AREI.
“The highest AREI for unprocessed red meat is 73 units per serving. The processed one has 37 units, ”the authors of the project said.
