Recall that Russia was expelled from the G8 in 2014 due to the annexation of Crimea. Subsequently, the European Union imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation after it became known that Moscow supports the militants in the Donbass.

US President Donald Trump considers it appropriate to allow Russia to return to the group of G7 countries. He said that the United States at one time insisted on the exclusion of the Russian Federation from the G8, because Putin outplayed Obama.

It was also reported that French President Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump agreed to invite Russia to the G7 summit in 2020. Speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, Macron reiterated this position.

The G7 currently includes the United States, Germany, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Canada. The leaders of these countries should meet next weekend in the French city of Biarritz.
