US Congress urges Trump to reconsider decision to withdraw troops from Syria

The U.S. House of Representatives condemned President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw US troops from northeast Syria, where Turkey is conducting a military operation.

The resolution, in which Trump is urged to reconsider this decision, was supported by 354 congressmen, against 60 were, DW reports.

The document also called on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to halt the offensive and comply with existing agreements on Syria.

On October 8, Turkey launched a military operation, Source of Peace, in the north-east of Syria against Kurdish formations that the Ankara calls “terrorist”.

Before this, on October 7, Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from Syria, which were deployed in the area of ​​the Turkish army's invasion.

On October 14, Kurdish armed groups entered into an agreement with the government of Bashar al-Assad on the deployment of government troops in several cities to protect against the advance of Turkey.

According to media reports, after American troops left the base in Syria, it fell under the control of Russian mercenaries supporting the regime of Bashar al-Assad and his Iranian allies.
